Whole Sign vs Placidus Houses: Choosing a House System

House systems divide a birth chart into twelve areas of life, but they do not all divide it the same way. Whole sign and Placidus are two of the most widely used systems today, and they can place the same planet in different houses. This guide explains how each works, why results differ and how to choose.

Your next step

Our Western chart offers a choice of Placidus or whole sign houses, and the Vedic chart uses whole sign houses. Try both and compare.

What a house system does

The zodiac signs describe where planets are along the Sun’s path. The houses describe where those positions sit relative to your birth place and time: above or below the horizon, rising or setting. A house system is the rule for dividing that local sky into twelve parts.

All house systems need an accurate birth time and place. If yours is uncertain, the house boundaries are uncertain too; see birth chart without birth time. For what each house represents, read the 12 houses in astrology.

Whole sign houses

In whole sign houses, the entire sign containing your Ascendant becomes the 1st house, the next sign becomes the 2nd house, and so on. Every house is exactly one sign, 30° wide. The Ascendant degree can fall anywhere inside the 1st house.

Whole sign houses are the oldest attested system in Hellenistic astrology and remain standard in much of Vedic astrology. Many modern Western astrologers have also returned to them for their simplicity.

What changes with whole sign houses

Because the houses follow the signs, the Midheaven (MC) does not always start the 10th house. Depending on your birth latitude and time, the MC can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th whole sign house. Astrologers using whole signs still read the MC, but as a point rather than a house cusp.

Placidus houses

Placidus is a time-based quadrant system named after the 17th-century astrologer Placidus de Titis. It divides the time each degree takes to travel from the horizon to the meridian into thirds. The four angles (Ascendant, IC, Descendant and MC) always start the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses.

Because it is based on time, Placidus produces houses of unequal size, and some signs can be “intercepted” (entirely inside one house) while others span two house cusps. It has been the default in many Western ephemerides and software since the 20th century.

Placidus at high latitudes

Near and beyond the polar circles, some degrees of the zodiac never rise or set, and Placidus cannot calculate all the cusps. People born at high latitudes often use whole sign, equal or Porphyry houses instead.

Why a planet can change house

Imagine a chart with Gemini rising at 25°, and Mars at 5° Cancer. In whole sign houses, Cancer is the 2nd house, so Mars is in the 2nd. In Placidus, the 2nd house cusp might fall at 15° Cancer, which would leave Mars in the 1st house, close to the Ascendant. This is an invented example, but the pattern is common for planets near a cusp.

Neither result is wrong. They are two coherent conventions, and each astrologer interprets within the one they use. If a key planet changes house between systems, it may be worth reading both descriptions and noticing which questions feel useful.

Other house systems

  • Equal houses: twelve 30° houses measured from the Ascendant degree.
  • Porphyry: divides each quadrant between the angles into three equal parts.
  • Koch: another time-based quadrant system, popular in parts of Europe.
  • Regiomontanus and Campanus: older space-based quadrant systems, still used in horary astrology.

How to choose a house system

Choose the system that matches the tradition you are learning from. If you follow Vedic or Hellenistic sources, whole sign houses are the natural fit. If you read modern psychological astrology books, many examples assume Placidus. You can also try both on your own chart for a while and see which descriptions prompt better questions. Our Western birth chart guide covers the Western options in context.

A few useful answers

What is the difference between whole sign and Placidus houses?
Whole sign houses make each sign one house, starting from the rising sign. Placidus divides the sky by time, so houses vary in size and always start at the four angles.

Which house system is most accurate?
There is no agreed answer. House systems are conventions within astrology; choose the one that fits the tradition you are working with.

Why is my planet in a different house in another app?
The app is probably using a different house system, or a slightly different birth time. Check both settings.

Does Vedic astrology use whole sign houses?
Whole sign houses are the most common approach in Vedic astrology, though some practitioners use other systems for specific techniques.
